Windows XPMicrosoft has hidden about 80 system tools for power users on the Windows XP CD, which you can install without much effort. For XP Pro and XP Home these utilities are on the installation CD in the directory called Support/Tools. If you only have a limited 'recovery' CD supplied with your PC, you can still download the tools for free from http://tinyurl.com/9mvm8 . You can install all the tools in one go using the suptools.msi installer; the individual tools can then be run from the command prompt. To open a command prompt, choose Start/Run and enter the command cmd. Here are a few highlights of what you can expect to find: Pviewer: The Process Viewer displays all running processes in its own window. You can display them according to priorities, stop them and view details of memory usage. Process Viewer differs to Task Manager in that it also works over a network. Hwperf: You can carry out an initial PC performance review using this tool and view the performance values from the Registry. Depends: Dependency Walker scans the loaded program modules - that is, exe files, dlls and sys files - and displays their dependencies in a tree structure. Diruse: This shows the storage space used by a specified directory and its subfolders. You can easily find directories above a certain size by using the /Q:size switch. Msicuu: This gets rid of all traces of programs installed using the Windows Installer. Netdiag: This helps with networking problems by carrying out a series of standard tests that help to isolate the cause. Below are recommended websites:
